What is a Facebook Application ?

Facebook is a privately held company that has a free website by the same name. It’s a social networking site that allows users to connect to each other, join groups and post personal information. People can add friends to their friend list, post messages privately and publicly and even play games with each other. The name Facebook come from books handed out to new students at some US colleges to help incoming students and staff get to know other people at the school.

Facebook was founded by a Harvard Student – Mark Zuckerberg, and initially membership was only intended for Harvard students. Later it expanded to other schools and later still became an open platform. There are currently over 150 million active users on a worldwide scale. In fact it has become so popular some workplaces have banned it as a site due to it’s downward affect on productivity!

In mid-2007 Facebook launched the Facebook Platform which was essentially a framework for developers to be able to create Facebook Applications that could leverage facebook features and could integrate into the web site. Facebook themselves have been the biggest contributors to facebook applications, but more and more individuals and companies are starting to make their own facebook apps. In fact there’s a hundred facebook applications being created every day!
